Appointed Person - Lifting

Course Overview

This course aims to provide delegates with the knowledge and skills to plan and have overall control and responsibility of a lifting operation.

Designed for candidates who possess relevant industry experience of lifting operations using cranes and wish to develop the further skills necessary in the role of an appointed person.

Safety in Slinging and Signalling (Rigger and Banksman)

Candidates should be academically competent to interpret lifting equipment specifications, loading charts, etc., to carry out surveys and to create lift plans and drawings.

Successful candidates will receive a certificate issued by RTITB

  • Introduction to the lifting industry and the duties and responsibilities of an appointed person
  • Relevant health and safety legislation and codes of practices, including method statements, safe systems of work, permits to work, risk assessments, and interpretation and extraction of relevant information
  • Duties and responsibilities of all individuals involved with lifting operations
  • Introduction to different types of lifting equipment and detailed introduction to cranes
  • Introduction to the different types of lifting accessories and their functions, limitations and potential causes of failure
  • Pre-use inspection, maintenance, thorough examination and testing requirements for lifting equipment and accessories
  • Site surveys and identification of hazards
  • Siting of the crane, including the assessment of strength and stability, ground conditions, and calculating the distribution of the total load
  • Drawings showing the area of the lifting operation
  • Assessment of loads
  • Lift categories, load complexities and environmental complexities
  • Load charts, rated capacity charts, rated capacity indicators, LMI, anti-collision systems
  • Weather forecasts, measurement of wind speed
  • Down-rating of lifting capacity for multiple lifting or lifting loads with large sail areas
  • Selection of cranes and lifting accessories
  • Signalling methods
  • Preparation of Lift Plans
  • Assessments

By the end of this course, candidates will be able to discuss and demonstrate the following aspects of their role as an appointed person:

  • Knowledge of the regulations applicable to cranes and the environment, and the ability to apply them
  • Knowledge of slinging techniques and their application
  • Technical knowledge of cranes, their characteristics, rated capacity chart and specification information, mechanisms and safety equipment
  • Identifying the hazards and risks associated with lifting operations within their area of work
  • Preparing a safe system of work
  • Selecting the correct lifting equipment and accessories for the work, ensuring full use of the various characteristics of the cranes in use
  • Ensuring that adequate pre-operational checks, intermediate inspections, maintenance and thorough examination of the equipment have been carried out
  • Ensuring that all relevant reports and other documentation have been completed correctly, and ensuring compliance with all statutory requirements and codes of practice during the lifting operation
  • Ensuring that the crane supervisor and other members of the lifting team are fully briefed on the contents, scope and limits of the method statement
  • Supervising the safe operation of any crane being used in the lifting operation
  • Ensuring that there is an effective procedure for reporting defects and incidents and for taking any necessary corrective action
  • Taking responsibility for the organisation and control of the lifting operation.
On-site training delivery
