Appointed Person – Lifting (Refresher)

Course Overview

This course aims to provide delegates with the knowledge and skills to plan and have overall control and responsibility of a lifting operation.

Designed for candidates who possess relevant industry experience of lifting operations using cranes and wish to develop the further skills necessary in the role of an appointed person.

Valid Appointed Person Permit issued by RTITB

Successful candidates will receive a certificate issued by RTITB

Other Details

  • Course Introduction, including introduction to the lifting industry and duties and responsibilities of an appointed person
  • Theory update: relevant health and safety legislation and code of practices
  • Site surveys, including identification of hazards, load and environmental complexities
  • Selection of cranes and lifting accessories, and load charts
  • Assessment of ability to prepare lift plans, risk assessments and method statements
  • Assessment

By the end of this course, candidates will be able to discuss and demonstrate the following aspects of their role as an appointed person:

  • Knowledge of the regulations applicable to cranes and the environment, and the ability to apply them
  • Knowledge of slinging techniques and their application
  • Technical knowledge of cranes, their characteristics, rated capacity chart and specification information, mechanisms and safety equipment
  • Identifying the hazards and risks associated with lifting operations within their area of work
  • Preparing a safe system of work
  • Selecting the correct lifting equipment and accessories for the work, ensuring full use of the various characteristics of the cranes in use
  • Ensuring that adequate pre-operational checks, intermediate inspections, maintenance and thorough examination of the equipment have been carried out
  • Ensuring that all relevant reports and other documentation have been completed correctly, and ensuring compliance with all statutory requirements and codes of practice during the lifting operation
  • Ensuring that the crane supervisor and other members of the lifting team are fully briefed on the contents, scope and limits of the method statement
  • Supervising the safe operation of any crane being used in the lifting operation
  • Ensuring that there is an effective procedure for reporting defects and incidents and for taking any necessary corrective action
  • Taking responsibility for the organisation and control of the lifting operation.
