Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Mechanic

Course Overview

The programme starts with an induction to the course and training facilities to fully understand the training process and requirements. This course is delivered through Instructor-led training and Workshop based practical training with various assessments to ensure that the candidate achieves theoretical and practical competencies. Upon successful completion, the candidates will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to take on the job role as a mechanic in Air Conditioning & Refrigeration system maintenance.

This training course is designed for aspiring technicians who wish to carry out basic maintenance for Air Conditioning & Refrigeration system.

The entry prerequisites are a good attitude toward learning, a solid motivation to study, and a reasonable level of language proficiency.

Candidates on successful completion of training are entitled to a ‘Certificate of Attendance’ attested by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation from NTI and a National Vocational Qualification Certificate from Excellence, Achievement and Learning (EAL), UK.

Unit 1: Practice and Application of Safety at Work.

  • Requirement of Safety in AC & Refrigeration, HASAWA
  • Relevant safety regulations -Safety signs- Basic Fire Extinguisher
  • Preparation of TRIC, Risk assessment matrix
  • Safe procedure for handling and storing COSHH, Hazardous materials, MSDS
  • Manual & material handling practice and lifting technique
  • Safe handling of chemicals, compressed gas and cylinder
  • Permit to Work, Work at height and confined space

Unit 2: Engineering Hand tools, Refrigeration tools and Materials

  •   Hand tools and their uses, marking, measuring and safe handling method
  • Fitting operations, hack sawing, filing, and chiseling
  • Drilling, reaming, tapping, thread cutting & grinding practice
  • Riveting, Fastening, sheet metal work and pipe joints
  • Refrigeration tools and materials, Flare fittings

Unit 3: E Refrigeration and Air conditioning Fundamentals

  • Mass, density, volume, Force and Velocity
  • Work, Power and Energy –Laws of conservation
  • Pressure, Atmospheric, Gauge, Absolute, Static and Critical pressure
  • Read psychrometery charts
  • Use sling psychrometer and anaemometer
  • Heat-Latent-Sensible-Specific-Heat flow and transfer-Enthalpy
  • Temperature-Types-Absolute and critical temperature
  • Laws of Refrigeration and Ton of Refrigeration
  • Condensation, Evaporation, Expansion and contraction
  • Laws of thermodynamics-Laws of perfect gases
  • Vapor Compression refrigeration Cycle

Unit 4: Air condition systems-components and Controls

  • Mass, density, volume, Force and Velocity
  • Safe procedure for handling and storing cylinder, BCGA Guide line, Code of practice
  • Preparing and using Oxy acetylene for brazing  operations
  • Material preparation, Filler materials properties, Role of flux in brazing
  • Flow position - Joint preparation – Brazing process- Brazing Defects
  • Compressor-Condenser-Function –Types -Working cycle-Application
  • Expansion device-Evaporator- Function –Types  -Working cycle-Application
  • System processing method –Recovery-Leak testing Evacuation and Gas charging 

Unit 5: Domestic and Industrial Air-conditioning (Maintenance, Repair and   Troubleshooting)

  • Identify various components of window and split AC
  • Identify the electric circuit of different air conditioners
  •  Undertake servicing of window and split type AC
  • Install different types of AC
  • Execute gas charging
  • Trouble shoot and rectify AC faults
  • Equipment selection-Function Types-Installation-Repair-Servicing procedure
  • Operating and Safety controlling device –Function –Types-Application
  • Refrigerator, Water cooler, Display case unit , Deep freezer - Trouble shoot and repair 
  • Window Air Conditioners, Electrical Wiring,-System processing –Repair and service
  • SPLIT A.C – Identifying components, electrical circuits, testing, Gas charging  Installation, and Trouble shooting
  • Multi split AC –Ducted Split AC, Package AC –Identify components-leak testing, evacuation, gas charging, Installation, and trouble shooting.

Unit 6: Basic of General Electrical 

  • Electric hand tools, wire joints, and safety accessories
  • Basic Electric concepts, Circuit symbols, Electric terms, Basic Laws
  • Electric circuits and wiring diagram layout
  • Testing  and measuring devices-Megger, Digital and Analog meter
  • Verification of ohms law, use of voltmeter, ammeter, multi meter
  • Compressor motor circuit  RSIR, CSIR, PSC & CSR
  • Check and test relay, capacitors & OLP’s, Faults and rectification, installation.

Unit 7: Refrigerant & Refrigerators.

  • Install and maintain different types of refrigerators such as frost free refrigerator
  • Install and maintain different Water cooler, deep freezer etc.
  • Repair electrical faults in different refrigerators and coolers.
  • Select and charge gas in refrigerators.
  • Transfer refrigerants from one cylinder to another cylinder.
  • Undertake retrofitting of refrigerator

 

By the end of the module the candidate will be able to:

  • Identify & deal with health and safety at work.
  • Carry out risk assessments for electrical activities.
  • Interpret different types of AC drawings and psychrometric chart.
  • Familiarize with basic engineering hand tools, their uses and application in and engineering environment.
  • Deal with electrical safety aspects and operational procedures.
  • Identify electrical hazards, Orientation towards the course, facilities rules and regulations.
  • Perform brazing operation and leak testing.
  • Install domestic & Industrial AC and carry out necessary checks and conduct routine maintenance.
  • Repair and Service of various types of controls used in A/C & Refrigeration systems.
  • Explain Heating, ventilating and infiltration.
  • Identify a single duct air delivery system and distinguish between a constant volume single zone and multi zone reheat systems.
  • Draw and explain a variable air volume and delivery system with reheat and without reheat.
  • List and explain the equipment found in packaged DX air handling units and air & water source heat pumps.
  • Describe the operation and control of centrifugal chillers and reciprocating chillers.
  • Integrate well into the work environment.
