Course Overview

This course provides skills and knowledge necessary to perform Advanced Air Conditioning & Refrigeration work efficiently in a safe working environment. It is designed for experienced qualified technicians to enhance their skills in Advanced Air Conditioning & Refrigeration and for beginners to learn fundamentals of Advanced Air conditioning & Refrigeration. It will comprise of classroom, workshop sessions and frequent assessments. On successful completion, the candidates will be able to perform effectively and safely.

This training course is designed to upskill the engineering technicians working in their own discipline or as an appreciation of another, where knowledge and understanding may be required.

The entry requirements are a positive attitude to learning and clear motivation to study with evidence of an appropriate level of Theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Candidates on successful completion of training are entitled to a ‘Certificate of Attendance’ attested by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation from NTI.

Unit 1: Practice and Application of Safety at Work

  • Requirement of Safety in HVAC.
  • Relevant safety regulations -Safety signs- Basic Fire Extinguisher.
  • Preparation of TRIC, Risk assessment matrix.

Unit 2: Application of Engineering Hand tools, Air conditioning tools and Materials

  • International systems of units- Presentation of units and values.
  • Preparing and using Oxy acetylene for brazing operations.
  • Flow position - Joint preparation – Brazing process- Brazing Defects.
  • HVAC tools and materials, Flare fittings etc.

Unit 3: The Fundamentals of Advanced air Conditioning & Refrigeration

  • ASHRAE Standards and Comfort Zones.
  • Function of Air Conditioning.
  • Basic Physics Involved in HVAC.
  • Units in HVAC (Ton & Kilo Watt).
  • Sensible and Latent Heats.

Unit 4: Psychometric Analysis

  • Reading a Psychometric Chart.
  • Dry Bulb & Wet Bulb Temperatures.
  • Relative Humidity & Humidity Ratios.
  • Dew Point Temperature & Enthalpy of Air.

Unit 5: Refrigerants in Advanced air Conditioning & Refrigeration

  • Introduction to primary & secondary refrigerants.
  • CFC Refrigerants e.g. R12.
  • HCFC Refrigerants e.g. R22.
  • HCF Refrigerants e.g. R134a & R410.

Unit 6: Basic Components of Air Conditioning

  • Compressor-Condenser-Function –Types -Working Cycle-Application.
  • Expansion Device-Evaporator- Function –Types -Working Cycle-Application.

Unit 7: Vapour Compression Cycle

  • Working of a Vapor Compression cycle.
  • Phase changing in Refrigerant.
  • System processing method –Recovery-Leak testing -Evacuation and Gas charging.

Unit 8: Classification of Air Conditioners

  • DX Direct Expansion AC Systems.
  • Chilled Water AC Systems.

Unit 9: Classification of DX Systems

  • Window AC Systems.
  • Split AC System.
  • Package AC System.
  • Ductable Split AC System.
  • Central AC System.
  • VRV & VRF AC System.

Unit 10: Classification of Chilled Water System

  • Water Cooled Chillers
  • Air Cooled Chillers.

Unit 11: Components of Chilled Water System

Unit 12: Basic of General Electrical 

  • Electric hand tools, wire joints, and safety accessories
  • Basic Electric concepts, Circuit symbols, Electric terms, Basic Laws
  • Electric circuits and wiring diagram layout
  • Testing  and measuring devices-Megger, Digital and Analog meter
  • Verification of ohms law, use of voltmeter, ammeter, multi meter
  • Compressor motor circuit  RSIR, CSIR, PSC & CSR
  • Check and test relay, capacitors & OLP’s, Faults and rectification, installation

Unit 13: Refrigerant (Primary & Secondary) Piping

  • Primary Piping System.
  • Secondary Piping System.
  • Condenser Piping System.

Unit 14: Testing, Charging, Adjusting, Starting the Air conditioning system.

  • Introduction of controls and Accessories, Temperature sensors
  • Analog and digital controls-Snap action controls-Pneumatic controls
  • Control of the system capacity-VFD-VRF-Microprocessor Based control
  • Pressure sensors, Humidity sensors, Actuators
  • Inverter Technology-Control action, Safety controls

By the end of the module the candidate will be able to:

  • Identify & deal with health and safety at work.
  • Carry out risk assessments for electrical activities.
  • Familiarize with basic engineering hand tools, their uses and application in and engineering environment.
  • Identify electrical hazards, Orientation towards the course, facilities rules and regulations.
  • Perform brazing operation and leak testing.
  • Define HVAC, Units in HVAC| Tonne and Kilo Watts, Components of AC Systems.
  • Carry out Recovery and Recycling of Refrigerant used, alternative of CFC, HFC re-cover Chilled Water AC Systems, Types of Chillers Systems.
  • Differentiate in VRF & VRV.
  • Lock Rotor Ampere & Full Load Ampere.
  • Perform servicing of electrical & electronic control test, installation, wiring, fault finding & remedial measures of different split AC.
  • Test mechanical & electrical components. Perform leak test, vacuuming, gas charging, Wiring & installation of refrigerator.
  • Do Aspect Ratio Calculation in Duct & Duct types.
  • Recognize Duct Fitting,Duct Accessories and types
  • Distinguish Primary & Secondary Piping Systems.
  • Describe the operation and control of centrifugal chillers and reciprocating chillers.
  • Integrate well into the work environment.
  • Identify the components of control system of Inverter A.C and wiring of control system
  • Perform servicing & de-scaling of condenser (internals &externals) used in different Appliances
  • Perform fitting & adjustment of drier, filter & refrigerant controls used in different Refrigeration system.
  • Perform servicing of different evaporator used in different appliances.
  • Carry out Recovery and Recycling of Refrigerant used, alternative of CFC, HFC re-cover, Transfer & handling of gas cylinders.
  • Pack thermal insulation and prevent cooling leakage.
  • Install window AC, test Electrical & electronics components & Fault diagnosis & remedial measures.
  • Perform servicing of electrical & electronic control test, installation, wiring, fault finding & remedial measures of different split AC.
  • Do servicing of car AC. Fault diagnosis & remedial measures
