Pipe Work and Brazing

Course Overview

The aim of these qualifications is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to work on Pipework and Brazing certification course is designed to ensure that personnel are practised in the use of special tools and equipment used to install or repair copper pipework in small commercial and split unit air-conditioning systems. The Pipework and Brazing course also covers the requirements of the Environmental Protection Act regarding the construction/repair of refrigeration pipework and the high pressure implications of new refrigerants.

The course is designed for an apprentice or beginner who would like to work as an AC mechanic.

The candidate should have basic knowledge on Air Conditioning. 

Upon completing the training course, candidates will be awarded a ‘Certificate of Attendance’ from NTI, attested by the Ministry of Manpower.

Other Details

Prepare materials and equipment

  • Job requirements are determined from specifications and/ or instructions.
  • Materials are correctly prepared using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Materials are correctly assembled/aligned to meet specifications as required.
  • Distortion prevention measures are identified and appropriate action is taken as required.
  • Heating equipment is assembled and set up safely and correctly in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Correct and appropriate consumables are selected and prepared.
  • Test run is undertaken and verified as required.

Braze and/or silver solder

  • Safety as applied to Oxy-Fuel Gas equipment.
  • Identification and safe handling of cylinders and associated equipment.
  • Correct lighting up and shutting down procedures.
  • Principles of Brazing and Silver Soldering process.
  • Types of filler wire and their applications.
  • Correct nozzle selection and flame setting.
  • Joint designs application and preparation.
  • Correct use of fluxes and their applications.
  • Brazing with Nitrogen pressure.
  • Silver Brazing. (Soft & hared copper tube brazing).
  • Copper Tube & Capillary tube Brazing.
  • The correct process is selected to meet specifications.
  • Materials are preheated as required.
  • Consumables are applied using correct techniques.
  • Jointing material is applied correctly and in appropriate quantities to meet job/specifications.

Inspect joints

  • Excess jointing materials are removed using correct and appropriate techniques.
  • Inspection of joints is undertaken to standard operating procedures.
  • Inspection results are reported/recorded using standard operating procedures as required.

 

By the end of the module the candidate will be able to understand:

  • Brazing terminology and definitions – A basic overview of brazing providing personnel a better understanding of the joining method.
  • Fundamentals of Brazing – The correct steps in brazing to produce consistent high quality of brazed joints. Proper heating, alloy application and the procedures for handling brazing torch.
  • Torch Safety – Safe brazing practices and proper handling of brazing equipment.
  • Torch Brazing Demonstration and hands-on practical training session
  • Demonstration of brazing methods and the correct brazing practices.
